CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER – Fiji Police Force

To report directly to the Head of Forensic Pathology and perform the duties of a Forensic Physician or Forensic Pathologist within the medico-legal death investigation process and system.

Key Responsibilities

  • The position Manage quality assurance, administration, logistics, and operations of the Forensic Pathology Unit under the direction of the Head of Forensic Pathology.
  • Conduct comprehensive autopsies for unnatural deaths (suicides, homicides, accidents, undetermined) and produce legally sound post-mortem reports.
  • Gather medical evidence from deceased persons, investigate forensic scenes, and ensure proper documentation and chain of custody.
  • Provide technical advice to strengthen forensic biology and chemistry laboratories in Fiji.
  • Offer medico-legal advice to Fiji Police, Judiciary, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and other legal bodies, serve as an expert witness when required.
  • Collaborate with specialists to identify unknown deceased or skeletal remains and prepare formal identification reports.
  • Communicate sensitively with relatives regarding the mode, manner, and cause of death following autopsy conclusions.
  • Identify and mitigate risks through effective communication and management, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Lead education, teaching, and research initiatives; mentor staff and students; promote continuous professional development and health advocacy.
  • Facilitate peer reviews, evaluate unit activities, and implement corrective measures to enhance service delivery.
  • Prepare autopsy reports and medico-legal assessments, providing expert opinions under the guidance of the Head of Forensic Pathology.
  • Actively contribute to divisional and corporate requirements, supporting organizational effectiveness and governance.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and experience in conducting Forensic post-mortem examination of cases under the Fiji medico-legal death investigation system.
  • Extensive experience in expert witness attendance.
  • Ability to work under pressure within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Good organizing skills and ability to meet strict deadlines.
  • In addition to the following knowledge, experience, skills and abilities, the applicant must have a Master’s degree in the field of Forensic Pathology or equivalent qualification like Pathology.

Salary

MD2B $143,573.94
