The International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Regional Resident Representative Office for Pacific Island Countries is inviting applications for the position of Local Economist.
The Resident Representative Office is based in Suva, Fiji, and covers 11 Pacific Island countries (PICs): Fiji, Kiribati, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Republic of Palau, Republic of Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Local Economist will work with the Resident Representative (RR) and country teams from IMF headquarters (HQ) to support the IMF’s surveillance and program work in PICs. The economist will report directly to the RR and also take direction from mission chiefs of designated country teams. Duties include:
Contributing to the work of IMF PIC teams, including joining missions, with a special focus on fragile and conflict-affected countries in the region.
Assessing, monitoring and reporting on economic and policy developments, collecting data.
Economic research and analysis using econometric techniques, IMF-based macroeconomic frameworks and databases.
Liaising with country authorities, development partners such as the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, and other stakeholders.
Assist the RR in IMF outreach, managing/participating in conferences, and administrative and other tasks as required.
Selection Criteria
Masters or Advanced Degree in Economics or related fields, with at least 5 years of relevant professional experience in monetary and/or fiscal policy, and the financial banking sectors. Experience working in a central bank, ministry of finance (or equivalent) or international organisation would be useful.
Sound knowledge of macroeconomics and strong analytical skills. Proficiency with Excel, and data collection/analysis. Familiarity with econometric techniques and software.
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, and demonstrated ability in writing high quality research and policy papers, as well as short and targeted notes.
Willingness to travel as needed to Pacific Island countries. Strong organization and interpersonal skills, willingness to learn, and ability to work effectively in a team.
The selected candidate will be offered a renewable, fixed-term contract, based in Suva, Fiji. The IMF offers competitive remuneration packages (including health and pension benefits) in line with the United Nations systems.
