Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications or certifications do I need to become a Security Officer at Holiday Inn Suva?

Most employers in Fiji require a Form 6/7 school certificate, a valid security licence issued under Fiji's security industry regulations, and completion of basic security guard training. First aid certification and previous experience in hospitality or crowd control are strong advantages. Some employers also conduct police clearance checks before hiring.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Security Officer in a Suva hotel?

Duties usually include patrolling the property, monitoring CCTV cameras, controlling access at entry points, and responding to incidents involving guests or staff. You will also write incident reports, assist during emergencies such as fires or medical situations, and support events held at the hotel. Maintaining a professional and courteous manner with guests is essential in a hospitality setting.

What work culture and expectations should I be aware of when working as a security officer in Fiji?

Fijian workplaces, especially hotels, value punctuality, respectfulness, and a friendly 'bula spirit' when dealing with guests. Shift work including nights, weekends, and public holidays is common in the security field, so flexibility is expected. Employers also expect honesty and strict adherence to confidentiality and safety procedures.

What career progression can I expect as a Security Officer?

Security officers can advance to senior officer, shift supervisor, or security team leader roles with experience and good performance records. With additional training, some move into areas like risk management, safety and compliance, or corporate security management. Hospitality experience in Suva can also open doors to related roles such as loss prevention or duty manager positions.

What benefits are typically offered to security officers in Fiji?

Common benefits include annual leave, sick leave, and contributions to the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) as required by law. Many employers also provide uniforms, meals during shifts, and overtime pay for extra hours. Larger hotels may offer medical assistance or staff discounts, though benefits vary by employer.

How do I apply for this role and what do employers look for?

Prepare a simple CV highlighting any security, military, police, or customer service experience, and submit it through the employer's careers page or in person with copies of your certificates and valid ID. Employers look for reliability, physical fitness, good communication skills, and a clean record. Being available for rotating shifts will strengthen your application.
