TECHNICAL ASSISTANT – Fiji Police Force

To ensure the secure handling, examination, and documentation of forensic biology exhibits, supporting investigations through accurate laboratory analysis, quality assurance, and effective communication.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible to the Senior Scientific Officer through the Scientific Officer
  • Prepare all relevant reagents and register details of reagent usage
  • Receive forensic exhibits and maintain their proper records and security
  • Conduct initial examination on exhibits received and submit for further analysis.
  • Qualitative examination of evidence using methods such as microscopy and spot testing.
  • Conduct DNA extraction, quantitation, PCR and DNA electrophoresis. Assist in QM and QA procedures.
  • Assist in QM and QA procedures
  • Maintain lab areas, equipments, and instruments according to established standards of cleanliness, safety and efficiency.
  • Conduct and ensure housekeeping duties are well implemented and in place
  • Stock all laboratory rooms with needed consumables.
  • Assist with calibration of instruments and analytical balances, pH meter etc.
  • Attend crime scenes when required
  • Update all manual and electronic registers; case register, inward/outward registers, statistics, inventory of equipment and management.
  • Follow up on cases with investigators and ensure that case folders are updated.
  • Responsible for dispatch of cases and exhibits
  • Establish and maintain effective lines of communication and build up good working relationships within the unit, with other units, with other typists for a collective achievement of the unit objectives.
  • Assist with laboratory research, development and validation methods as required.
  • Maintain a broad and current knowledge of local issues, police operation procedures and local action plans.
  • Ability to use modern office equipment in the performance of duties and work in under pressure situations.
  • Uphold confidentiality, neutrality and professionalism
  • Actively contribute to departmental priorities, including planning, budgeting, and corporate activities.

Requirements

  • Sound interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure and with minimum supervision ;
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize computer programs to support the Operations of a complex organization and
  • Committed to a service-oriented approach to support the corporate goals of the Force and providing excellent customer service.
  • Knowledge of operational and administrative policies and procedures, relevant legislation, records management, Fiji Police’s code of ethics, Corporate plans and OHS policy
  • Must have a Diploma in Lab Technology or above from a recognized institute with at least 2 -3 years’ experience in a relevant field or equivalent and/or relevant skills. Must be confident in the applications of Biology and utilization of analytical equipment and procedures.
  • All applicants for employment in the Fiji Police Force must be Fiji Citizens, under the age of 55 years, in sound health with a clear police, Medical and drug record. Salary

G: $32,038.10 – $51,489.81
